## What is
repainting?
By [NK2](https://nextcandle.trade/about/#nk2) · checked 2026-11-03

An indicator repaints when signals it showed on past bars change after the fact. On a chart the history looks perfect, but live it would have shown something different. TradingView documents the causes in its Pine Script manual ([source](https://www.tradingview.com/pine-script-docs/concepts/repainting/)).

## Common causes
- Using values from the still-open bar as if final.
- Requesting higher-timeframe data with lookahead, which can leak future data into history.
- Pivot or zigzag logic that confirms a point only after later bars print, then plots it back in time.

## How to check
- Prefer open-source scripts so the code can be read.
- Watch a signal live in replay or forward test and compare it to history.
- Be skeptical of win-rate screenshots from closed-source tools.

## How NextCandle scores it
Repaint risk is worth 25 of 100 points. We have published source-code reviews for the four open-source scripts and cite TradingView’s docs for three built-ins; everything else is marked untested. Live bar-replay tests are still pending, so scores stay provisional. See the [methodology](https://nextcandle.trade/methodology/).
